Yarn is similar to string in many ways. It is a length of fibres that are
interlocked for the purpose of using it to create textiles, or for sewing, knitting, weaving,
crocheting, ropemaking, or even embroidery.
Yarn, as most consumers know it, is thicker and softer than thread, and is
usually used for things like knitting and embroidery.
Another type of yarn, though, is called thread. Most people use thread for
machine sewing or for sewing by hand. Thread is thinner then yarn.
There are many different kinds of yarns available. For one, there is yarn called spun yarn. This
is yarn that is made by bonding or twisting different staple fibers together with one another to make a
thread that is called a cohesive thread.Twisting them together is performed by a process they call spinning.
Another type of yarn is filament yarn. Filament yarn is actually made from long filament fibers
that are grouped or twisted together. Texturized yarn is made by a process known as air
texturizing.
Yarn is usually sold by weight, and there are different thicknesses of yarn that are also called
weights. Craft yarn is usually sold in balls according to the number of ounces it weighs. The lengths will
vary due to how much the yarn weighs. This yarn is usually weighed in a relatively normal humidity and
temperature so that the weights reflect the actual weight of the yarn.
Thread, which is like a different type of yarn, is sold on spools as opposed to in a ball or a
roll. Rolls of craft yarn, as well as a yarn
winder, and spools of sewing thread can be bought at about any sewing or craft store, but they can
also be bought online.
